About Me.

Hello! My name is Aase Fogarty. I was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and now live in Seattle, where I continue to explore my passions and embrace new experiences. I love to travel, whether it’s for a weekend adventure or a long getaway, and I’m always eager to discover new places and cultures. When I’m not traveling, you can find me practicing yoga, reading, writing, or spending time outdoors—skiing, hiking, and enjoying the beauty of nature. I also love to cook and bake, constantly experimenting with new recipes and flavors.

From a very young age, I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer. In preschool, my dream career was already clear: writing. Over the years, this passion has only grown stronger, and I’ve had the privilege of having teachers and professors who have consistently encouraged me, telling me I’m a gifted writer. This constant support has fueled my drive to pursue my passion and share my voice through my work.

My core values are rooted in kindness, hard work, and GRIT. I believe in treating others with respect and empathy, always striving to give my best, even in the face of challenges. Life is about continuous learning and pushing myself to grow, both personally and professionally.

I’m excited to continue my journey as a writer, and I hope my words inspire, connect, and leave a lasting impact on others.

English Literature
Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University

I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in English Literature and a 3.9 GPA in my major from Barrett, The Honors College, where I had the privilege of studying both locally and abroad. My time in Germany and Switzerland, where I focused on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, opened my eyes to the global relevance of literature and its impact on society.

Beyond literature, I’ve developed proficiency in multiple languages, including Spanish and Norwegian, and honed skills in marketing and sales. These diverse experiences have equipped me with a unique perspective, allowing me to approach challenges with creativity and critical thinking. My academic journey has been complemented by a strong commitment to excellence, as reflected in my consistent presence on the Dean’s List and the honor of receiving the Dean’s Scholar Award, as well as the New American University Scholar recognition. Additionally, I was a member of the Leader's Academy, further enhancing my leadership and academic development.

Creative Writing Sample

The waves crashed, spraying mist menacingly across my face. The salt smeared into my mouth, reminding me of my mama’s popcorn. Salt from my own eyes began to form as rapidly as the storm had rolled in.

How could this be my life? How was any of this real?

I had to be in a dream. Nothing in real life should ever be this gut wrenchingly painful. That’s just not fair.

I gasped as a sword sliced through my lungs, knocking me to my knees. I barely noticed the barnacles beneath me as they carved through my skin. It didn’t matter. Nothing matters. Not anymore.

I stared across the horizon, its view blurry due to the unending tears in my eyes. The storm raged, procuring white caps and currents that splayed in every direction.

I used to want nothing more than to live by the sea. Not anymore. The sea was him. It was us. Not anymore. Not anymore.

Pain soared through my chest, through my whole body. Somewhere nearby, a transformer blew, sending blue sparks through the misty sky, illuminating the wet sand.

Suddenly, a hard, strong hand gripped my shoulder. I whipped my head towards the unexpected touch.

“It’s not safe,” he said gruffly. “You need to get inside.”

Without waiting for a response, he hoisted me up off my knees. My soaking wet dress clung to my legs, sending shivers throughout my body.

I didn’t see any sense in arguing. I was too tired. Nothing matters. Not anymore.

A rational person might wonder who this strange man was. Then again, a rational person wouldn’t dare to be seaside during a storm like this. A rational person would’ve never gotten into my situation.

I trailed behind the strange man as he jogged across the sand towards a rusty Jeep waiting in what was left of the parking lot. Branches from various palm trees soared across the concrete wasteland, threatening to take us out before we reached the car’s safety.

The man whipped open the passenger seat door, beckoning me to get in. I promptly agreed. I wasn’t sure why. There was no desire in my heart to remain on this earth. Not anymore. Not without him.

I jumped as the engine roared to life, ripping me out of my daydream. In the light I could finally make sense of my savior. His skin was weathered, due to many days out in the Florida sun, no doubt. His shoulder length dirty blonde hair hung in his face as he aggressively cranked the steering wheel in the opposite direction.

“Who are you,” I questioned, finally somewhat present.

The man faced towards me for a brief moment, his big brown eyes surveyed me. “You must have some sort of death wish to be out in a storm like this,” he scolded.

            “Speak for yourself,” I countered.

He smirked, pulling his lips tight. “Name’s Hudson. And you are?”

“I’m Sofia,” I replied. Though if I were being honest, I’d say, I’m not really sure who I truly am anymore. Not without him.

            “Pleasure, Sofia.”

In the distance, another transformer blew, casting the angry night sky with visions of blue and grey. The interior of the Jeep rattled with the force of the wind cascading upon us. There was no doubt we were in the eye of the storm.

We used to hold each other in storms like this. He was my rock amongst the chaos. He’s my safe place. Was. Was my safe place.

My body clenched with the realization that I would never see him again. Never hear his laughter. Never hear his whistling tunes as he returned home from work. Never see the crinkle in the corners of his eyes when he smiled at me. Never feel the touch of his hands on my hips. Never smell his patchouli scented skin. Never kiss his lips. Never again.

Tears cascaded down my face. I didn’t care that I was in the presence of a stranger. Nothing mattered. Not anymore.

“Hey, hey,” the strange man seemed to coo. “No need for any of that, you’re gonna be ok, I have a safe place for us to go to wait this storm out.”

I nodded, not wanting to reveal the true meaning behind my sorrow.

I guess I was grateful for the unexpected assistance. He wouldn’t want me to go out. Not like this. He would’ve hated every part of it. I couldn’t do that to him. I loved him too much.

...

Blood dripped down my fingertips, pooling at my feet. I stared at the figure on the floor, not quite comprehending what had just happened.

My mama used to tell me I needed to get my anger under control. That I would lash out when I didn’t get my way and frighten her. I guess mama was right.

I stepped towards the body, terrified to see the damage.

It was far worse than anything I could have imagined.

His hair lay matted on his forehead, sticky with his own blood. Gashes tore at his face, likely from my own rings. His nose seemed broken. He would have hated that. He loved his nose.

Symbolism in modern poetry has long been a subject of fascination for literary critics and enthusiasts alike. Through the use of symbols, poets are able to convey complex emotions, ideas, and themes in a way that transcends literal meaning. In this critical analysis, we will delve into the world of symbolism in modern poetry, exploring how poets use this literary device to enhance their work.

One of the most striking aspects of symbolism in modern poetry is its ability to add layers of meaning to a poem. By using symbols, poets can create a sense of depth and richness in their writing that allows readers to interpret the work in multiple ways. For example, a simple image like a rose can symbolize love, beauty, or even pain, depending on how it is used within the context of the poem. Additionally, symbolism in modern poetry can also be used to explore larger philosophical or societal themes.
